47th Annual ASSA Congress 07 to 09 April, Pilanesberg, South Africa

March 7, 2019 @ 8:00 am - March 9, 2019 @ 5:00 pm

On behalf of the Forensic Anthropology Research Centre (FARC) and the Department of Anatomy at the University of Pretoria, we would like to invite you and your colleagues to the 47th Annual Conference of the Anatomical Society of Southern Africa from 07 to 09 April, 2019 at the Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge and Conference Centre in Pilanesberg, South Africa. The conferences encompasses interests in national and international forensic anthropology, macroscopic and microscopic anatomy, and medical education. We invite you to submit abstracts on investigations into the biological profile, bone trauma analysis and palaeopathology.

In 2019, the FARC will be offering a one-day workshop on “How standard is standard? A glimpse at current anthropology methodology, proficiency and practice”?  The workshop will require practitioners to introspectively assess their best practice methodology for forensic case analyses. As analysts, we know our results are only as reliable as the methods we use to assess the material. But what happens if there is no consistency in how measurements are taken? or in how reference data is collected? While most recent publications address the issues of repeatability of measurements, as well as following recommendations set with best practice guideline, the combining of different investigator’s work along with inherent errors incorporated into reference databases may negate the usefulness of any proposed method. The workshop addresses the importance of proficiency in not only analysing forensic case material, but also in creating new methods and/or databases and their application to the real world of work. We invite you to join us for an interesting session on the latest anthropological methods and to test your measurement skills against those of other forensic anthropologists. You are welcome to register for the entire conference or for a single-day.

Information pertaining to the first call for abstracts and registration is attached. Please pass this on to anyone you make think would be interested.

We look forward to seeing you in South Africa.
